A group of UCYP students participated in a programme involving two institutions from Malaysia and Indonesia, namely UCYP and Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). This programme was held for two weeks from August 27, 2023, to September 10, 2023, at Universitas Negeri Padang. A total of eight students and two accompanying coordinators joined this mobility programme. In aiding students to gain a global perspective for professional advancement and success in any environment, this International Mobility Programme provides opportunities to enhance their learning experiences by exposing them to the cultural, economic, political, and educational aspects of other countries. With the slogan “Expand Your Horizon, Explore the Diversity,” it aims to provide valuable experiences and knowledge for the development of their soft skills, which will be highly beneficial for them as future leaders among UCYP students.
As part of UCYP’s journey towards becoming a full-fledged university, the International Mobility Programme has become a crucial agenda. Students need opportunities to embrace learning experiences that go beyond the ordinary. Over a span of two weeks, they remained actively engaged in activities both outside and within the classroom. During the initial week, their activities were primarily extracurricular, involving tourism and cultural exploration. They were exposed to various facets of Minangkabau culture, including dialects, cuisine, culinary traditions, local history, and must-visit spots. The first week of their activities were mainly outside the classroom. From day one, various activities were held outside such as a visit to Air Terjun Lembah Anai, The Aie Angek Cottage Museum, Rumah Puisi Taufiq Ismail and other tourist attractions. They also get to experience the taste of Indonesian local foods like Bakso and Nasi Padang. It was a total immersion experience for the students.
The second week of their mobility programme is mostly activities in the class. As for classroom activities, they were divided into four faculties experiences due to the participation of eight UCYP students who were originally enrolled in different faculties at UCYP, Malaysia. The faculties at UNP that were involved in this exchange included the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Language and Arts, and the Faculty of Economics and Business. The students observed several differences and similarities in the classroom system and the learning environment implemented by UNP students in terms of classroom learning approach, the execution of both individual and group assignments and how UNP students utilize the student portal system. The students were assigned to make a report on the classroom environment as a mobility assignment. Through this assignment, they can witness how the institution has a different approach to their students.
In general, international mobility initiatives of this nature bring about a beneficial influence on the participants by enriching their experiences in a foreign land, particularly in gaining insights into the local culture, educational practices, and the historical backdrop of the host nation, with a particular focus on Padang, Indonesia. Additionally, their teaching methods can serve as valuable references for enhancing the classroom environment and elevating the quality of education at UCYP. May this programme provide participants with delightful experiences, and it is hoped that they can make the most of their two weeks filled with beneficial and informative activities.
