The Launch of Eco-Green Policies of KESB, UCYP and KYP in Conjunction with World Clean-up Day 2023 Celebration: A Joint Initiative for Environmental Sustainability

On 22 September 2023, UCYP, in collaboration with the Pahang Ecology Research Centre (PERC) and SWCorp Pahang, successfully hosted the launching of Eco-Green Policies at the KESB, UCYP, and KYP levels. This meaningful event was officially launched by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Development & Community Diplomacy), Associate Professor Dr. Azhar bin Jaafar@Ramli, executing as the Vice-Chancellor, and attended by Puan Hajidah binti Md Noh, Deputy Director of SWCorp Pahang, Mr. Ahsraff bin Kaharudin, Assistant Director of SWCorp Pahang, as well as the top management team from KESB, UCYP, and KYP, along with staff and students.

World Clean-up Day (WCD) is a globally recognized annual program initiated by SWCorp in Malaysia. In acknowledgment of its importance, KESB / UCYP / KYP collaborated to celebrate the World Cleanup Day 2023 in conjunction with the launch of Eco-Green Policies, serving as one of the activities for the UCYP and KYP Convocation 2023. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of UCYP and KYP to fulfilling their social responsibility in preserving the environment. It also aligns with the latest initiatives from the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Infrastructure and Asset Development), led by Puan Hajah Rugayah binti Hussein. The formulation of the Eco-Green Policies for KESB / UCYP / KYP was initiated in May 2023. It draws inspiration from the Green Management Strategy and encompasses various initiatives, including the Eco-Care: Empowering a Greener Future campaign.

This program successfully gathered a total of 710 students and staff from UCYP and KYP, all united in supporting environmental preservation efforts. The event’s objective was to encourage community participation and volunteer involvement in the clean-up and waste area for the purpose of  auditing activities. It marks a positive step toward the government’s initiative to incorporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) concept and practice in each institution’s operational activities. The program included activities like the launch of Eco-Green Policies, briefing sessions for volunteers on the clean-up activities, grouping, and safety briefings to ensure all participants adhered to safety guidelines throughout the program. The event was also enlivened by an aerobics session led by the ECE Fitness Club, UCYP.

The clean-up activities were divided into six zones, consisting of the UCYP campus and its surrounding areas. Nearly 1.2 tons of waste were successfully collected during the program. Additionally, a “Trash to Cash” activity was organized to raise awareness about recycling. Participants were encouraged to sell recyclable items to reduce waste, pollution, and promote sustainable practices.

This program is seen as a crucial step towards environmental sustainability and aligned with KESB / UCYP / KYP’s plans to participate in the UI Greenmetric World University Ranking, the world’s first university ranking system that emphasizes campus sustainability. It is hoped that the success of this program will serve as a model to other educational institutions and the local community. Furthermore, it is expected that these efforts will continue to pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
