Citizens of UCYP benefitted from a Mentor-Mentee Carnival that was organized by UCYP Counselling Centre in collaboration with Adabi, Anita Bakery, Batik Adina Kuantan, Klinik Zahran and Food Truck on 22nd September 2022. ‘Sukaria, Sehati, Sejiwa’ which brings the idea of being together while having fun is chosen as the concept of the carnival that aims to promote a sense of respect and strengthen the relationship between the students (mentee) and academic advisors (mentor). Held in UCYP Main Campus, Tanjung Lumpur Kuantan, the carnival was attended and participated by almost 800 participants and visitors.
Almost all of the faculty members comprising of Faculty of Human Development (FHD), Faculty of Management (FOM), Faculty of Science, Engineering and Agrotechnology (FSEA), Faculty of Creative Arts (FCA), International Institute for Islamic Civilization (IIIC), Multilingual Innovation Institute (MII), Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), Business School for Asia (BSA) and Post Graduate Centre (PGS) gave their full supports, making the carnival a place of celebration. The Mentor-Mentee Carnival became more meaningful with the presence of Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Mohd Ismail bin Abd Aziz, a member of the UCYP Board of Governance.
The ‘My Talent’ Competition held on the night of 21 September, was the start of the carnival competitions. The night featured singing talents, poetry, and dance as well as musical instruments performances which were piano and guitar. Such activities provide an opportunity for students to build self-confidence while making room for them to entertain and relax for a while. In addition, competitions such as cake decoration, ‘Cooking with Adabi’, batik colouring, telematch and aerobics managed to strengthen the relationship among students, lecturers and staff. The visitors were not only entertained by the antics of the participants but also felt the intimacy built from the activities planned and carried out. The carnival was enlivened too by the presence of food trucks selling a variety of food. In addition to food and beverage varieties, the online payment method made buying and selling activities easier and friendlier.
Meanwhile, a brief program was also held for six (6) staff in conjunction with the YaPEIM Inspiration project and a talk from AIA representatives on Insurance Coverage. There were also health screening booths where students or UCYP staff have the chance to get check-ups on their health.
Based on the survey and monitoring conducted by the Counseling Centre, such programs are able to create a strong unity spirit and a sense of respect between students and lecturers. A significant impact of this program is that the mentees can build better self-esteemed and better feelings to cope with problems as they receive guidance and care from mentors. The feedback received from the participants, on average, suggested that such activities can be continued in the future, and greater involvement of participants and staff as well as a longer period of time should be considered.
Congratulations to the UCYP Counseling Center and all committee members involved in the success of the “Sukaria, Sehati, Sejiwa” Mentor-Mentee Carnival.
