From 15th to 19th November 2024, the much-anticipated Toastmasters International Speech Competition was hosted by the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). The event gathered 34 participants from across the region, transforming the campus into a stage for creativity, confidence, and communication mastery.
The competition was more than just an event—it was a celebration of public speaking, leadership, and personal growth. Participants ranged from seasoned Toastmasters to ambitious newcomers, each eager to deliver speeches that moved hearts and challenged minds. Adopting the theme “Legacy,” this year’s competition emphasized the enduring impact of words and the importance of leaving a meaningful mark on the world through communication. Over the five days, 34 participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Philippines competed in categories such as International Speeches, Table Topics, and Evaluations, showcasing their diverse talents and perspectives.
The competition reflected a regional spirit of collaboration, with contestants from institutions including UCYP University. Notably, Muhammad Zaheen bin Azimi and Siti Khadijah binti Mohd Khair proudly represented UCYP University, contributing their voices to the event’s rich tapestry. Muhammad Zaheen captivated the audience with his unique topic on the miswak, an ancient natural toothbrush. His speech not only explored the miswak cultural and historical significance, but also drew a connection to the theme of preserving heritage. Siti Khadijah moved listeners with her heartfelt speech titled “Legacy of Love,” in which she delved into the profound impact of love and compassion in shaping lives and family, inspiring the audience with her sincerity and depth.
A heartfelt appreciation goes to Yayasan Pahang for their financial support, which enabled participants to take part in this prestigious competition. Their contribution exemplifies a commitment to educational excellence and talent development.
Students who participated gained invaluable benefits, including enhanced confidence and public speaking skills, exposure to diverse perspectives and cultures, networking opportunities with peers and professionals from across the region, and a deeper understanding of leadership through effective communication.
The International Speech category stood out, with topics ranging from personal resilience and legacy building to cultural diversity and environmental sustainability. Contestants captivated the audience with their authentic stories and powerful messages. After intense deliberation, the judges crowned winners from Indonesia for first and second place, while a representative from UMS secured third place, further highlighting the high caliber of speeches presented throughout the competition.
Beyond the competition, the event featured education sharing sessions on delivering effective messages and sharpening impromptu speaking skills. These sessions provided participants and attendees with valuable tools to hone their skills in communication.
UCYP University takes this challenge to develop more talents who can excel on platforms like this.
